The Vital Web website has recently been updated to use responsive design. What is reponsive design? And why do we need it?

Responsive design is a website layout that re-formats and re-sizes the layout depending on the size of the device the site is being viewed on. This means one layout is used for traditional desktops screens, another for tablets and another again for mobiles.

The old website worked on mobile sites, in that everything scaled down and worked perfectly in miniature. However this requires a lot scrolling and zooming by users, a frustrating and tedious business with two thumbs.

Responsive design results in the layout altering to suit the size of the device, without having to scale down text. Most repsonsive designs move from being a multi-columned webpage, to a long single column. Mobile users are used to, and indeed expect to, scroll vertically, as long as you don’t also ask them to scroll horizontally.

This is the website for Ayrshire Flyers Speed Skating Club. The Ayrshire Flyers is a shorttrack Ice Speed Skating club, based at Auchenharvie Ice Rink, Ayrshire.

This is an example of a WordPress website, maintained by VitlWeb. This is the third version of the site, which we have been maintaining for several years. Re-designing and implementing it in WordPress has made it easier to maintain and keep up to date, and allows for the prospect of the club committee updating the site themselves.
